With 67% of the Vote, California Young Democrats Endorse Bernie Sanders for President

On Saturday night, members of the California Young Democrats—one of the largest caucuses within the California Democratic Party (CDP) representing members in local chapters across the state—voted to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2020 presidential primary.

Sanders won 67 percent of the votes—more than twice what any other candidate received—in the nation's most populous state that will hold its Super Tuesday primary on March 3, 2020.

Of the 126 votes cast during an evening CYD meeting at the California Democratic Convention held in the city of Long Beach, Sanders received 84 votes (67%) while Sen. Elizabeth Warren received 29 votes (23%), the second-largest number in the crowded field. Sen. Kamala Harris came in third place among caucus members (aged 13 to 35) in the state she represents in the U.S. Senate. The landslide meant that Sanders was able to take the endorsement in just one round of voting.

Notably, former Vice President Joe Biden received zero votes while South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg received only one.

While supporters of Sanders in California characterized the vote as "huge," the campaign on Sunday evening counted the CYD endorsement among a slew of others like it, both in California and elsewhere, over the last week. As Mike Casca, Sanders' communications director, tweeted:

"The endorsements," the campaign said in its statement, "represent the vibrant and growing grassroots support that Sanders’ campaign is receiving from coast to coast."

BERNIE SANDERS' CAMPAIGN MANAGER SHARES VIDEO OF SENATOR NAILING 3 CONSECUTIVE BASKETBALL HOOPS IN 10 SECONDS

Senator Bernie Sanders' campaign manager this weekend shared a short video of the 78-year-old 2020 candidate impressively nailing three consecutive basketball hoops in roughly 10 seconds.

"3 for 3," Faiz Shakir tweeted on Sunday afternoon, alongside a clip of Sanders shooting hoops outside. Within an hour, the video had garnered over 11,000 likes and nearly 2,000 retweets.

In the 38-second-clip, Mrs. Sanders can be heard saying "now you're just showing off," as her husband continuously scores five hoops in a row, misses one and then lands another.

Newsweek reached out to Sanders' 2020 team for comment, but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Although it is uncertain when exactly the videos were taken, Sanders' wife post suggests that the candidate's basketball session occurred earlier on Sunday, ahead of his return to Nevada to host a town hall in Las Vegas this evening.

The videos comes roughly six weeks after Sanders suffered a heart attack. Although the unfortunate incident was predicted to damage his 2020 presidential campaign, after endorsements from two prominent Democratic liberals, congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, the senator appears to have moved past the potential political upheaval unscathed.

In recent weeks, Sanders has been focusing on his health issues as well as his campaign. His new daily regime reportedly includes a healthier diet, regular walks and exercise. Mrs. Sanders has also been ensuring her husband receives adequate rest as he continues his campaign trail.

"I've noticed him ordering a heck of a lot more salads," Shakir told The New York Times.

Despite warnings that his health scare would push progressive voters to back Senator Elizabeth Warren, Sanders currently still remains in the top tier of Democratic candidates vying for the party's 2020 nomination. In the latest CBS News/YouGov poll, released on Sunday, Sanders tied with former Vice President Joe Biden to lead the primary field, both drawing 22 percent each. While South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg followed closely behind with 21 percent and Warren garnered 18 percent.

The poll showed Sanders' support increasing by three percentage points since September, as Warren, his progressive competitor, dipped by 10 percent.

However, the latest Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom poll, released Saturday evening, showed Buttigieg soaring to a nine-point lead among Iowa caucus goers with 25 percent. In that poll, Warren trailed behind in second place with 16 percent, while Biden and Sanders tied for third with 15 percent each.

Sanders reclaims second place in new 2020 poll

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) outpaces progressive 2020 rival Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for second place nationally, according to a Hill-HarrisX poll released on Monday.

Among likely Democratic and Democratic-leaning independent voters, Sanders holds 18 percent support, followed by Warren with 15 percent.

Former Vice President Joe Biden still leads the pack with 30 percent support, a 4-point increase compared to his low of 26 percent earlier this month.

No other candidate registered double-digit support, with South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg in a distant fourth place with 7 percent and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in fifth with 4 percent.

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has yet to formally announce his 2020 bid, registered at 3 percent in the latest survey.

The rest of the Democratic field, including businessman Andrew Yang and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), registered at 2 percent or less.

The survey comes ahead of the fifth Democratic presidential primary debate this week in Atlanta.

Wednesday night's MSNBC debate is set to feature 10 candidates: Biden, Warren, Sanders, Harris, Buttigieg, Booker, Yang, billionaire Tom Steyer, as well as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.).

In order to qualify for the November debate, the candidates had to garner support from at least 165,000 unique donors and register at least 3 percent in four qualifying polls or 5 percent in two early-state polls.

The new Hill-HarrisX poll surveyed 449 registered voters online between Nov. 16 and Nov. 17. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.

“This is damn impressive,” said progressive strategist Rebecca Katz.

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign announced Tuesday morning that it reached four million individual contributions faster than any presidential candidate in history, a milestone the campaign touted as evidence that the Vermont senator is surging with less than 80 days to go before the Iowa caucuses.

“This is what momentum looks like,” Faiz Shakir, Sanders’ campaign manager, said in a statement.

“Working class Americans across the country are chipping in $3, $18, $27, or whatever they can to help elect Bernie Sanders,” Shakir added, “because they know he is the only candidate who will fight for them and take on corporate greed and corruption.”

The Sanders campaign said it did not reach four million individual contributions in 2016 until after the New Hampshire primary in February.

“This is damn impressive,” tweeted progressive strategist Rebecca Katz.

The fundraising milestone comes after Sanders received several major endorsements over the past week, including National Nurses United, United Teachers Los Angeles, and the California Young Democrats.

Sanders led all 2020 Democratic presidential candidates in fundraising in the third quarter of 2019, raking in $25.3 million from an average donation of just $18. Teacher has been the most common profession of Sanders donors, while Amazon, Walmart, and Starbucks have been the top employers of Sanders contributors.

The Vermont senator, who has campaigned on his opposition to endless U.S.-led wars and regime change, is also leading all 2020 presidential candidates—including incumbent President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Pete Buttigieg, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan—in contributions from members of the military, according to an analysis by Foreign Policy.

The presidential candidate has taken aim against large corporations and the wealthy during his campaign for the White House, criticizing President Trump’s tax bill for letting “wealthy corporations” off the hook of paying their share of taxes.

Trump’s tax bill that went into effect in January 2018 gave a $1.5 trillion tax cut to U.S. corporations.

CBS reported in April that Netflix had an estimated negative income tax for fiscal year 2018, meaning they reported a $22 million tax rebate and paid nothing. A report from WUSA9 investigated Netflix’s form 10-K, which showed the company spent $133,146,000 in foreign taxes, but nothing in federal and state taxes in fiscal year 2018.

The Hill reached out to Netflix for comment.

Sanders also condemned the news that FedEx also didn’t owe anything in taxes in fiscal year 2018, reported by The New York Times Sunday.

DE BLASIO ON BLOOMBERG IS BELOW. I DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT DE BLASIO, EXCEPT THAT THE POLICEMEN OF NEW YORK ON MORE THAN ONE SHOCKING OCCASION TURNED THEIR BACKS ON HIM IN A DRAMATIC PUBLIC DISPLAY BECAUSE HE HAD TRIED TO AMEND THE POLICE BRUTALITY PROBLEM. De Blasio slams Bloomberg run for president: He 'epitomizes the status quo'

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) took aim at his predecessor, Michael Bloomberg, on Monday over the latter's interest in a run for president next year.

De Blasio, who dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary in September, said Monday that Bloomberg, a billionaire who has been showing strong indications of entering the race, is aligned tightly with the political establishment and would be unable to rally voters.

“Would he be better than Donald Trump? Of course. Should he be the Democratic nominee? No,” de Blasio told Politico in an interview. “This is a Democratic Party today that’s getting more progressive, that wants to address the concerns of working people, that does not accept the status quo. There’s no way in the world we should nominate a billionaire who epitomizes the status quo.”

The New York mayor went on to blast Bloomberg over his handling of rising income inequality in the city during his time in office, calling the businessman "tone deaf" to issues of working families.

“When he was mayor he had no understanding of the inequality crisis. I think he was absolutely tone deaf to what working people are going through in this city,” de Blasio said.

“I’m objective about the fact that there were some things he did well,” he reportedly added. “I can certainly prefer him over Donald Trump. But does he represent today’s Democratic Party? Of course not, not even close.”

De Blasio's own presidential bid ended earlier this year after he failed to gain traction in early primary states. The mayor's brief presidential run was centered around support for progressive causes such as the Green New Deal and "Medicare for All."

Reports indicated this week that if the former mayor were to mount a late entry into the presidential primary, he would forgo competing in the four earliest nominating contests.

Bloomberg previously wrote in an op-ed earlier this year that running for national office would "diminish" his ability to effect change in the country.

"I know there’s much more we can accomplish over the next two years, but only if we stay focused on the work and expand upon it," he wrote in March. "And the fact is: A national presidential campaign would limit my ability to do that."

RAHM EMANUEL WRITES HERE ON BLOOMBERG AND PATRICK OFFERING AN “IDEAS PRIMARY.” WELL, BERNIE IS CHOCK FULL OF IDEAS; THE THIRD WAY JUST DOESN’T LIKE ANY OF THEM. SANDERS HAS NOT RECOMMENDED A UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME. THAT WAS YANG, AND BERNIE SPECIFICALLY STATED THAT HE IS NOT IN FAVOR OF THAT BECAUSE PEOPLE NEED TO FEEL PRODUCTIVE. I AGREE WITH BOTH OF THEM. IN MY LIFETIME I HAVE BEEN UNDEREMPLOYED AND SOMETIMES UNEMPLOYED OFTEN ENOUGH TO KNOW ABOUT IT. THE GUARANTEED UNIVERSAL INCOME IS A SAFETY NET. EXPENSES ARE ALWAYS HIGH, AND THE BASIC INCOME WOULD GIVE THOSE WHO HAVE A LESS THAN WELL-PAYING JOB, ARE UNEMPLOYED, HAVE PHYSICAL OR MENTAL DISABILITIES (INCLUDING DRUG ADDICTION) A BETTER CHANCE TO AVOID SLEEPING IN THEIR CARS.

THE SITUATION THAT FACES AMERICANS TODAY HAS DIRECTLY TO DO WITH THE GRAND CANYON SIZED GAP BETWEEN THE LESS THAN WELL-TO-DO – BELOW $80,000 OR SO -- AND THE GROTESQUELY WEALTHY. SUCH A WEALTH GAP HOPELESSLY DISTORTS THE ABILITY OF THE REALLY POOR AND WORKING-CLASS LEVELS TO MAKE IT AT ALL. THAT MONEY DOESN’T TRICKLE DOWN NEARLY FAST ENOUGH. IT MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TO SAY THIS, BUT THE AMERICAN DREAM IS THE “PIPE DREAM.” THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO LADDER IN THIS COUNTRY THAT GIVES A STEP TO CLIMB UP ON. AS FOR THAT OLD HACKNEYED “BOOT STRAP” IDEA, THAT’S AS RIDICULOUS AS IT IS HEARTLESS. GO GET YOURSELF SOME NEW “IDEAS,” RAHM!

WE NEED THE GREEN NEW DEAL AND BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE JOBS, AS WELL AS A GUARANTEED UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME, SO THAT WHEN A MAN, WOMAN OR CHILD DOES NOT HAVE A SUFFICIENT INCOME FOR SAFETY, DIGNITY AND SANITY, THEY WON’T HAVE TO GO WITHOUT BASIC NEEDS, AND CERTAINLY NOT BE WITHOUT SHELTER, MEDICAL CARE AND FOOD. LOTS OF PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY HAVE NO IDEA HOW HARD MANY PEOPLE’S LIVES ARE, AND IT ISN’T FROM LACK OF “INCENTIVES,” EITHER.

Rahm Emanuel: Bloomberg, Patrick entering race will allow Democrats to have 'ideas primary'
BY JUSTINE COLEMAN - 11/18/19 09:01 PM EST

Former mayor of Chicago and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said former Gov. Deval Patrick’s White House bid and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s potential run will allow the Democrats to have an “ideas primary.”

Emanuel praised Patrick’s entry and Bloomberg’s potential bid in a Washington Post op-ed as “a chance to shift the narrative” from the far-left concepts that he said have dominated the primary, such as the redistribution of wealth.

The former chief of staff to President Obama said the redistribution of wealth has been mistaken as the party’s “animating creed” during the 2020 primary as candidates Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have advocated for it.

Emanuel said he thinks a Patrick and potential Bloomberg entry could help the candidates focus on discussing how to obtain “inclusive growth.”

“We’re stronger as a party when we debate substantive proposals for how to expand prosperity and opportunity,” he wrote. “But to meet the far left’s big ideas, traditional liberals need to show up with bold ideas of their own.”

The former Illinois congressman emphasized that traditional Democrats have historically backed programs based on the concept that people should work for their living, including Social Security and Medicare.

“Our most sweeping successes fighting poverty have emerged when we’ve offered the American people a core bargain: If you work through the course of your life, the government will help you climb into the middle class,” he wrote.

Emanuel continued that he thinks “Medicare for All” is “a pipe dream” and universal basic income contradicts the American value of working for prosperity.

“When our party has nominated candidates banging the drum for redistribution — such as George McGovern or Walter Mondale — we’ve lost,” he said. “Hopefully, bids from Bloomberg and Patrick will serve as a wake-up call.”

President Obama recently warned the 2020 Democratic field last week from moving too far to the left, saying “we have to be rooted in reality.”

Bernie Sanders takes swing at MLB attempt to throw out Iowa minor league baseball

PHOTOGRAPH -- Bernie Sanders greets supporters as he walks to the stage to be introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference Center on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019. (Liz Martin/The Gazette)

Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose politics were shaped early in life when his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers moved out of town, is taking a swing at Major Leagues Baseball owners and executives for their plans to shutter three Iowa minor league baseball teams.

A MLB proposal earlier this week would close the Quad City River Bandits, Burlington Bees and Clinton LumberKings, teams the Cedar Rapids Kernels play in the Midwest League. The Kernels apparently would be spared.

“Closing down Minor League teams like the River Bandits, the Bees and the LumberKings would be a disaster for baseball fans, workers and communities across Iowa,” Sanders said. “We must protect these teams from corporate greed.”

According to Sanders, who is seeking the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, the plan to end the teams’ affiliation with their respective MLB teams comes after minor league players filed a lawsuit demanding to be paid the minimum wage.

The Professional Baseball Agreement between MLB and Minor League baseball expires after this coming season. According to reports, MLB was going to demand in negotiations that minor league affiliates upgrade facilities and provide better accommodations overall for players. MLB also wanted to cut down on minor league travel and have its affiliates be located closer to their big league clubs.

The teams on the chopping block are as much a part of Iowa’s economy and cultural fabric as the Field of Dreams, where Sanders and his campaign staff played members of the media and a youth group from Cedar Rapids in August, he said.

The Burlington Bees just finished their 95th season of play. Clinton has had baseball in town since 1895, with the LumberKings franchise launching in 1954. The loss of the River Bandits, who trace their history back to 1901, would leave the Quad Cities without professional baseball for the first time since 1879. The Quad Cities were rated the nation’s top minor league market in 2015.

John O’Donnell Stadium in Davenport has survived floods for decades and provided an economic anchor for the Quad Cities. Community Field in Burlington has generated significant annual revenues for the city for decades. Clinton’s home park — originally dubbed Riverview Field when it was built in 1937 — has seen future All Stars such as Kyle Seager and James Paxton draw fans for years.

“By threatening to rip baseball out of these communities, the billionaires who control America’s pastime are showing their true colors,” Bernie 2020 Deputy Iowa Director Bill Neidhardt said. “This isn’t about what’s good for baseball. It’s about greedy executives refusing to give even a tiny bit more of their massive wealth to the young people who keep their businesses booming.”
